If you live here, you already know the summer story the guidebooks tell: pineapple in June, quiet in July, Junkanoo at Christmas. The calendar on the ground is louder than that. Between Independence Week and the last weekend of July, three settlements host homecomings, one hosts a fishing tournament, Wemyss Bight lights up for Goombay, and the Anchor Bay Fish Fry keeps going every Friday it can. The question is not whether there is anything to do. It is which drive is worth making on which night, and how to keep from crossing the island twice in a weekend.
The July Calendar, From North To South
Most of what runs this month is on the Ministry of Tourism's public listings and confirmed by settlement development committees. Here is the shape of the month, ordered by date:

If your house is in Palmetto Point, that is a full month of driving decisions. The Bluff is roughly an hour north on Queen's Highway. Wemyss Bight is nearly ninety minutes south. Skipping the middle weekend costs you nothing except a familiar Friday. Skipping the wrong weekend costs you the best food of the summer.
The Fish Fry Gets Quieter This Month, And That Is The Point
The Anchor Bay Fish Fry is hosted by the Governor's Harbour Development Association every Friday night near Cupid's Cay, and the proceeds do not stay in the fry pan. They fund the annual homecoming and various community projects. So the same association that keeps the Friday grill lit is the one preparing the settlement's own homecoming in the fall. In July, when The Bluff and Savannah Sound both open on a Wednesday and run through Monday, a good portion of the regular Fish Fry crowd migrates. You will still find the fried fish, native dishes, and the Rum Bubbas. You will find more elbow room than you did in April.
The Fish Fry itself is not going anywhere. It has been running every Friday, weather permitting, since long before 1999. What changes in July is the center of gravity. On a Bluff weekend, the center of gravity is at the homecoming site off Queen's Highway in The Bluff, not at the viaduct into Cupid's Cay. Plan accordingly.
Independence Week And Homecoming Week Are Not The Same Week
This is where residents new to the island get tripped up. Independence celebrations run July 5 through 10, 2026. The Bluff and Savannah Sound both open their homecomings on July 8. The overlap is two nights, not the whole week, and it explains why the second weekend feels heavier than the first. If you are hosting family from Nassau or Freeport, that is your window. Homecomings pull Bahamians back to their home settlements from Nassau, Freeport, and the United States, celebrated at night in the center of the settlement, with food stalls and live bands drawing hundreds of locals and visitors.
The Bluff And Savannah Sound, Same Nights, Different Drives
Both events run July 8 through 13, 2026. From Governor's Harbour, The Bluff is north through Gregory Town and past the Glass Window Bridge. Savannah Sound is south, past Palmetto Point, on the Atlantic side. You cannot do both in one evening without missing the point of either. Pick the direction on Friday, and try the other on Saturday if the weather cooperates.
Savannah Sound's homecoming committee has been publishing an email contact for the last few years, and the venue is Longley Newberry Park off Queen's Highway. The Bluff runs out of its development committee's homecoming site. Both settlements expect live entertainment by Bahamian artists, native food, and mixed drinks running late.
Lower Bogue Closes The Run
Lower Bogue Homecoming takes over July 16 through 19, a four-day weekend that closes out the north-end stretch before Spanish Wells picks up the following weekend with its Fishermen's Fest. If you are on the north end already for a homecoming, staying an extra day and crossing over to Spanish Wells by water taxi is the least painful way to catch both.
Where To Eat On The Way
Homecoming food is settlement food, cooked in tents, and often the best meal you will eat all month. The question is what to do on the drive there and back. A few reliable stops, roughly north to south, worth knowing if you are not making the trip often:
- The Cove Eleuthera on the north end near Gregory Town, if you are already up there for The Bluff and want to bookend the evening with something quiet. It is a Michelin Key resort and the only Relais & Châteaux property in The Bahamas, so reservations matter.
- Lizard Café in Gregory Town for lunch on the way up. Popular lunch stop serving jerk wraps and pumpkin soup, with Sunset Lounge, formerly Elvina's, nearby for spiced seafood.
- The Island Farm on Queen's Highway. The place to stock up on local produce, with cinnamon rolls worth lining up for. If you are hosting people at your house before driving out to a homecoming, this is where the sides come from.
- Da Perk in downtown Governor's Harbour for coffee before you start driving. On Queen's Highway with a view of the harbour and free wifi.
- 1648 at French Leave Resort, for the meal you have earned after driving to Lower Bogue and back.
- Kitchen Express food truck at Bay Front Park, Monique's truck open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 to 5, with cracked chicken and cracked pork chop. Weekday lunch when you don't want to cook.
- The Shipyard on Spanish Wells if you are staying over for Fishermen's Fest.
One Rule Of Thumb, If You Take Nothing Else
The Fish Fry is the default. Homecomings are the exception. In July, the exceptions outnumber the default, and the driving distance from your house is the most useful filter you have.
That framing keeps you from over-committing. It also explains why the pace on the island in July feels different from June, even though the Pineapple Festival is the one that gets Forbes coverage. The Pineapple Festival returned on June 5 and 6 for its 37th year, and it belongs to Gregory Town. July belongs to the settlements taking turns.
What To Bring, When To Arrive
Cash, a folding chair if you have one in the car, and mosquito spray. Eleuthera's events start late and last all night, so there is no need to arrive early unless you want to sample the food stalls before they run down. If you have out-of-town friends staying with you, the homecomings are a better introduction to the island than any restaurant would be. They will remember the band. They will not remember the drive.
By the last weekend of July, the calendar quiets. The Fish Fry regains its center of gravity, the winter residents are still months from returning, and the island settles back into the pace people think July is supposed to have. That two-week window in the middle is the one worth planning around.
